In the Blink of an Eye

This portfolio is entitled In the Blink of an Eye. An eye blink is usually unconscious and nearly imperceptible. It is a metaphor commonly used to describe the speed and suddenness with which events might occur. This collection of photographs highlights fleeting connections, loss, and the momentary nature of human perception. But, paradoxically, these photos also hint at the meaning that exists outside of the frame that deserves notice or attention.

Ersatz

This photo was taken in Óbidos, Portugal. Taken from a high angle, the viewpoint prevents anything but the lawn and the pool from appearing in the frame of the photo. This perspective was intentional in order to make the image abstract and geometrical. The saturated water color and the grass that is trimmed very low to the ground creates an uncanny feeling. I wanted to capture a sense of fabrication and a false utopia. The narrow frame of vision creates mystery around what is out of frame, suggesting there might be something the viewer cannot see. “Ersatz” conveys unease, originating from a sense of fabricated reality. *This piece was exhibited in the "2024 Fresh Perspectives" exhibition at the Morris Museum, a Smithsonian-affiliate museum.
