In the Blink of an Eye

This portfolio is entitled In the Blink of an Eye. An eye blink is usually unconscious and nearly imperceptible. It is a metaphor commonly used to describe the speed and suddenness with which events might occur. This collection of photographs highlights fleeting connections, loss, and the momentary nature of human perception. But, paradoxically, these photos also hint at the meaning that exists outside of the frame that deserves notice or attention.

This photo was taken in Savannah, Georgia. It depicts a striking portrait with the model’s face making up the majority of the frame, ensuring that we are confronted with her knowing gaze. I requested that she look into the lens directly, so that her stare could penetrate the viewer. The use of the camera’s flash heightens the intensity of her observant stare. The stormy sky and the model’s billowing hair contribute to the underlying energy of the image, hinting at an omen or an incantation in the air. The subject of this portrait is aware of something, and the viewer is struck by this.
