In the Blink of an Eye

This portfolio is entitled In the Blink of an Eye. An eye blink is usually unconscious and nearly imperceptible. It is a metaphor commonly used to describe the speed and suddenness with which events might occur. This collection of photographs highlights fleeting connections, loss, and the momentary nature of human perception. But, paradoxically, these photos also hint at the meaning that exists outside of the frame that deserves notice or attention.

Ascension

Image 5 of 15

This photo was taken in a parking garage in Savannah, Georgia. “Ascension” can be interpreted in different ways. At face value, the image appears almost divine or sublime, depicting a corridor of growing golden light, like steps towards the heavens. But beyond the allure of this lighted pathway, there exists a subtle tension which produces unease. My title “Ascension” might suggest rising beauty and virtue, but the bleak setting of an industrial parking garage is an important juxtaposition. Can we aspire to a higher plane in a paved parking lot? This photograph utilizes a compositional "sinister diagonal" with the ramp declining from left to right. “Ascension” is a paradox which implies an underlying grievance. *This piece is a Silver Key Scholastic Arts Award winner, 2025.
