In the Blink of an Eye
This portfolio is entitled In the Blink of an Eye. An eye blink is usually unconscious and nearly imperceptible. It is a metaphor commonly used to describe the speed and suddenness with which events might occur. This collection of photographs highlights fleeting connections, loss, and the momentary nature of human perception. But, paradoxically, these photos also hint at the meaning that exists outside of the frame that deserves notice or attention.
Saudade
This image was taken in Colares, Portugal. The chosen angle of the shot was intentionally low to the ground, with only the floor and the legs of a chair made visible. The backdrop of the photo remains shadowy, with the stark exception of a vivid stream of light emerging from a window that is out of the picture’s frame. This contrasting light and the long shadow implies the late hour of the day and a setting sun. Saudade is the Portuguese word for a feeling of longing, melancholy, or nostalgia. It is a tempermental word, capturing the feeling of a memory. The image represents the quiet pause at the end of the day, or the close of a chapter, but it is not necessarily a sad photograph. The warm colors and the persian rug emit an intimate feeling of cherished time suspended. “Saudade” is melancholic and sentimental at once.
