In the Blink of an Eye

This portfolio is entitled In the Blink of an Eye. An eye blink is usually unconscious and nearly imperceptible. It is a metaphor commonly used to describe the speed and suddenness with which events might occur. This collection of photographs highlights fleeting connections, loss, and the momentary nature of human perception. But, paradoxically, these photos also hint at the meaning that exists outside of the frame that deserves notice or attention.

This photograph was taken in Tomar, Portugal, in the Convento de Cristo Monastery. The viewpoint of the image is from within a dark and decaying interior space. There is visible aging, crumbling and wear on the wall, paint chipping with water erosion. The slit of a small rectangular window is a stark contrast from the musty and dark interior, giving the viewer a glimpse of a bright saturated sky and vibrant pink flowers. The window represents what is beyond this prison like hole, revealing evidence of vibrant life on the other side of the wall. This piece makes the viewer feel trapped on the wrong side of an imposing barrier. The small opening filled with color and light teases and taunts, making us aware of our captive view. *This piece is a Silver Key Scholastic Arts Award winner, 2025.
