In the Blink of an Eye

This portfolio is entitled In the Blink of an Eye. An eye blink is usually unconscious and nearly imperceptible. It is a metaphor commonly used to describe the speed and suddenness with which events might occur. This collection of photographs highlights fleeting connections, loss, and the momentary nature of human perception. But, paradoxically, these photos also hint at the meaning that exists outside of the frame that deserves notice or attention.

Retreat

Image 13 of 15

This photo was taken in Odeceixe, Portugal. The subject of the photo, the Dragon Tree house plant, is obscured in the dark on the left half of the frame. Light from a window shimmers into the composition from the right side, subtly illuminating just three leaves. The tree appears to lean away from the light, seeming to stretch in avoidance. It is almost as if the plant is cowering from light, intending to retreat in the shadows. We can imagine that the tree avoids the spotlight, yet is caught slightly, a snippet of itself exposed. Overall, “Retreat” conveys reluctance and hesitancy.
